Hairdressers

In Japan I found the Hairdressers very interesting... "for the Open Studio at the Center of Contemporary Art in Kitakyushu I invited professional hairdressers to do traditional Japanese hairstyles on some Japanese girls and on myself. They put black hair extensions on my blond hair and blond extensions on the Japanese girls. What I wanted to create was an exchange between est and west by isolating and recreating a daily life situation" and "for the project with Marina Abramovic in Kokura, I asked a lady, who regularly washed and hanged a soccer team's t-shirts on her balcony, to hang them again for us. My intention was to remind this person that she normaly did a pubblich visual work. My intention was to remind everyone of the importance little rituals things of everyday life have on the city's landscape." Nowadays a lot of Contemporary artistical research is directed in restablishing a contact not only argumental with social reality, but concrete and comunicative with the world.
Hairdressers Project
Hair is an extension of thought. They have roots around our mind and they feed on the substance of our thoughts...
In Japanese tradition, the woman's hair represented their life itself and for that reason was never cut. Only religious women and those whose husbands died would cut their hair as a gift and sacrifice of their own life. The first Japanese girls who cut their hair short, were called "moga" from "modern girl" in a very insulting tone. I was told that still today when a girl with long hair goes to the hairdresser in Japan, she will be asked repeatedly if she is sure of her decision, before cutting. (from a conversation with an exponent of Japanes Life and Culture Association)
I think it would be very interesting to create the particular atmosphere that is so easy to find among women in such a situation. I would like to put in relationship the contemporary world with the past through Japanese women's and the way their done. I would like to desine the different stages that go in to the making of hairstyles. The return to the arcane, as in the fresco, a primitive grotto dimension, where there are women who in forgotten ways take care of eachother's bodies, of eachother's lives... (from a Shiseido project that I propose to them...)
Great pubblic works of the past had, before becoming works of art, a strong social and comunicative function; let's think of, for example, to the religious frescos of churches in the catholic world, at the religious places everywhere, or at the markets of European Renaissental courts. The final aim, is not the hairstyle ,which is only a part of the whole process of the hairdresser's trade.. I am interessed on the process in it self! So, people, surrounding... and I like to show the hairdressers as a pubblic places were differt kind of people meet, were different culture met, talk and get to know each other.
So at the hairdresser the conversation gets animated on the ups and downs of life, of daily problems.
Proposal for a life event in Bologna
Così dopo il Giappone, la Norvegia, Torino con le parrucchiere africane, l' Olanda con parrucchieri turchi, cinesi., ora Bologna.
Hairdressers party - for Cafè 9
Mi piacerebbe come si è pensato assieme, organizzare per cafe 9 un party tra le parrucchiere africane, coinvolte per Big Torino 2000. Poi se ne potrebbero invitarne alcune anche da Bologna, o da altre città vicine, e se avremo opportunità anche di altre culture, oltre a quelle africane. Loro potrebbero venire con i loro attrezzi del mestiere e fare qualche treccina o qualche estensione al pubblico.
Questo party potrebbe essere la sigla di chiusura o di apertura, oppure un break della trasmissione televisiva. o di qualche altro intervento.
Mi piacerebbe molto se alcune di loro fossero invitate anche a parlare e a raccontare la loro esperienza di vita in Italia, c'è una di loro che si chiama Angela, è molto bella e solare e lei piace parlare in pubblico, è giovane ma già gestisce un negozio.
(Chiaramente ci sarebbero da rimborsare i loro viaggi in treno o in macchina e sarebbe bene organizzarlo una domenica pomeriggio oppure sera, quando generalmente hanno la giornata di riposo)
Non ti ho ancora mandato i video che ti avevo promesso, Purtroppo non è ancora pronto il video delle performance dentro la Biennale Big Torino dove avevo creato questo salotto per parrucchieri africani e loro facevano treccine e estensioni al pubblico della Biennale di Big Torino, (C'era una bellissima interazione tra le persone!) Ma credo sarà pronto per il 5 di Agosto per Hilversum altrimenti lo devo fare assolutamente entro settembre in quanto ho un piccolo finanziamento per farne una edizione video in 100 copie, e quindi ti manderò una copia di quella, appena fatta.
Intanto posso mandarti per Caffè 9, ma anche per Eurovision 2000 i tre video fatti precedentemente in Giappone, (dove mi mettono la parrucca tradizionale giapponese e alle ragazze giapponesi estensioni bianche) a Oslo, (un video molto breve di una cliente molto dolce, che sorride sotto una macchina molto strana asciugacapelli) e il video che era visibile a Torino durante la Biennale Big , l'argomento non è il salotto che ti dicevo prima, ma direttamente i negozi di parrucchiere africane di San Salvario e Porta Palazzo (i due quartieri etnici della città).
