Siciliy: Tourism, Culture and Enhancement - (in the works of J.W. Goethe and W.Von Gloeden)
?, 2000
by Ethical. Bros., Catania

The video has been conceived on purpose of EuroVision2000. We decided to show colonialism within our own cultural environment without disturbing others. <Siciliy: Tourism, Culture and Enhancement> is a video-documentary about the struggle to emancipation of two German intellectuals who visited Sicily. The work wants to show how this way to enhancement is so linked to the exploitation - say philosophical, symbolic or iconographic - of an ideal of a <original Sicily> as much as the industrial societies enhancement process caused the methodical exploitation of their colonies natural resources. In his <Italian
Journey>, Goethe is immersed in the huge vegetation of <Villa Giulia> in Palermo and starts to develop some concepts that will function as basis for the forthcoming genetic theories. Meanwhile he is also concerned in studying Odyssey. In the Homer's poem the Greek Italian colonies are territories populated by archaic beings called <Cyclops> and other mythological figures whom are dominated by the Ulysses' intelligence and artifices. <Wilhelm von Gloeden> is a German photographer who lived in Taormina at the beginning of the 20th century. He is famous for having represented in his work the inhabitants of the Sicilian village, depicted with equivocal postures and within kind of neo-classical exotic environment. Under the Mediterranean sky, both travellers free themselves >>from -but only after they wholly develop and extend - their own moral constraints.
